The first stage role I ever played was in “Oliver!” when I was twelve. As such, the songs from that production are burned into my mind like a permanent brand.

So, there’s this jazz standard that I always thought sounded like “Food, Glorious Food” from that musical. You’ve probably heard it. It’s “On Green Dolphin Street,” composed more than a decade before “Oliver!” premiered in London.

If you ask me, Bronislaw Kaper would have had a much better plagiarism case against Lionel Bart than Marvin Gaye’s family has against Robin Thicke.

Listen and see what you think.

I noticed it myself this week. And Googling led me here! It took me some time to realize it was Food, Glorious Food. I knew it was from some play!

I’m so glad you said this. I just had this same realization when On Dolphin St played on NPR.
